Exciting plans to build a new primary school in Romford have been approved by the Department of Education.

The new school in Bridge Close will be opened by the Unity Schools Partnership, which has underseen “amazing improvements” at St Edward’s Academy since it joined the trust three years ago.

Unity Schools Partnership is also in the process of building a special school on the grounds of St Edward’s Academy in London Road as part of their plans to create an educational hub in the town.

Tim Coulson, chief executive, said: “We are delighted that our application to open a new primary school in Bridge Close, Romford, has been approved.

“Since St Edward’s Academy became a member school, we have got to know the educational needs for children and families in Romford and we have grown a real affection for the community.

“We know that we have been given approval because of the amazing improvements that have taken place at St Edward’s under the headship of Jodie Hassan and her fantastic team.

“It was always our plan to grow educational opportunities in the town and have a group of schools working together in Romford.

“We have strong experience in opening new schools and we are very excited to open two new schools – a primary and a special school – in Romford.”

The primary school will start as a one form entry primary school and grow over the years to three forms in each year group.

It will have a nursery and specialist provision for children with special educational needs.

Mr Coulson said an opening date had not yet been confirmed but they would be working closely with Havering Council and the Department of Education and more details would be announced as soon as possible.

Jodie Hassan, headteacher of St Edward’s Academy, said: “We are delighted that a new primary school has been given the go-ahead.

“We look forward to working closely with the primary school staff and new students and their families going forward.”

“It was always our plan to grow educational opportunities in the town and have a group of schools working together in Romford.”
