The new headteacher of Langer Primary Academy has outlined her vision for the future as the school joins a new academy trust.
The Felixstowe primary school has joined the Suffolk-based Unity Schools Partnership, made up of 25 secondary, primary and special schools across the county and Romford.
At the same time, Martha Hughes, who has been interim head since June, has now been appointed the permanent headteacher at the school in Langer Road.
Martha said the experience gained in the last few months has given a great grounding on the school’s priorities going forward.
She explained: “My initial impressions were that the school had really friendly children and a hugely committed and dedicated staff team who enjoy a good relationship with parents.
“Everyone gave me a really good welcome so when the chance came to apply to be permanent headteacher, it was an easy decision to make.
“I can see so much potential in this school.
We have changed aspects of the curriculum, bringing in a new maths system from Singapore, the Success 4 All programme and reintroducing music for every pupil.
“We are placing an even greater focus on behaviour and respect and we have introduced the Head Boy and Head Girl programme – the first time any pupil at Langer has ever held that role.
I am confident we can rapidly improve outcomes.”
Martha, who was formerly assistant headteacher at Coupals Primary Academy in Haverhill, added: “I wanted to become a headteacher in a primary school and I needed a new challenge – and one that would excite me.
“The timing was right and I am delighted to be the new headteacher of Langer Primary Academy.
Tim Coulson, chief executive of Unity Schools Partnership, said: “We are delighted to welcome Langer Primary Academy into our trust.
“It is a school with huge potential and we look forward to working with, and supporting, Martha and her team to bring about improvements.
”Welcoming the appointment, Suffolk Coastal MP Therese Coffey said: “I’m sure Martha Hughes’ experience of senior leadership at another Suffolk school, accompanied by her desire for change and increased rigor, will have a positive impact at Langer Primary.
I have high hopes for Unity Schools Partnership and hope they will deliver for pupils.”
